Lutein
Lutein is a type of carotenoid, a class of natural pigments found in many plants, algae and bacteria. Lutein is known for its health benefits, particularly for eye health.
Lutein cannot be produced by the human body, so it must be obtained through the diet. Dietary sources of Lutein include green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, as well as eggs, corn, and peppers. Here are some of the best-known benefits:
Eye Health
Lutein is one of the two main Carotenoids) (along with Zeaxanthin) found in the retina, particularly in the macula, which is responsible for central vision. These carotenoids protect the eyes from oxidative stress and blue light damage, preventing or delaying age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
Antioxidant Properties
Like other carotenoids, Lutein has antioxidant properties that help protect cells from free radical damage.
Brain Health
Some research suggests that Lutein may play a role in maintaining brain health as we age. Studies of older adults have found that higher levels of Lutein are associated with better performance on various cognitive tasks.
Skin Health
Lutein can help protect skin from sun damage by reducing inflammation and improving skin hydration and elasticity.
As always, it is important to consult a health care professional before starting any new supplement or treatment. Lutein is generally considered safe, but it can interact with some medications and may not be suitable for all people.
