Selenomethionine
Selenomethionine is the organic form of Selenium in which this essential trace element is bound to the amino acid Methionine. It is characterized by high bioavailability and is easily incorporated into the body’s proteins in place of Methionine. It is mainly used as a source of Selenium in dietary supplements.
Foods that contribute Selenomethionine in significant amounts are mainly: Brazil nuts, which are one of the richest sources of organic selenium in the form of selenomethionine. Whole grains and seeds such as wheat, corn, oats and sunflower seeds, when grown in Selenium-rich soils. Legumes, including lentils and soybeans, which accumulate organic selenium in their proteins. Vegetables (to a lesser extent), such as garlic, onion, and broccoli, which may contain selenomethionine if grown in selenium-rich soils. In animal products (meat, fish, eggs, milk) selenium is found partly as selenomethionine and partly in other organic forms such as Selenocysteine. The main benefits of taking Selenomethionine, whether deficient or in supplement form, are as follows:
Hair, skin and nails
Selenomethionine is essential for maintaining healthy hair. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting hair follicles from damage caused by free radicals and oxidative stress, factors that contribute to hair loss and premature aging. Selenium also supports the activity of antioxidant enzymes, which prevent scalp inflammation and promote a healthy environment for hair growth. It also helps maintain optimal sebaceous gland balance.
Immune System
Contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and protects cells from oxidative stress through its role in endogenous antioxidant systems.
ThyroidFunction
Supports normal thyroid function, as selenium is a key cofactor for the synthesis and activation of thyroid hormones.
Male Fertility
May help protect male fertility by supporting sperm formation and motility.
Antioxidant
Due to its antioxidant properties, it is useful in counteracting cellular aging and damage caused by free radicals.
Excessive intake of Selenium, including the organic form Selenomethionine, can cause a condition known as Selenosis, which is characterized by various side effects. The maximum tolerable limit established in Europe for adults is 300 micrograms per day, including both dietary Selenium and Selenium from supplements. Always remember that it is important to consult a health care professional before starting any new supplement or treatment.
